Who is Granola for?
A good fit if you …
- have several client, project or team calls a week,
- write summaries or follow-up emails after conversations,
- would rather listen than type during a call,
- are self-employed and choose your own tools.
Probably not if you …
- hold conversations involving health, HR or other especially sensitive data,
- work at a company that hasn’t approved tools like this,
- mostly meet in person without a laptop.
How Granola works
- Before the meeting: Granola connects to your calendar and opens a notes page for the meeting.
- During the call: You only jot down the points that matter to you. Granola transcribes your computer’s audio in the background.
- Afterwards: Your bullet points and the transcript become structured notes – with decisions, tasks and open questions.
- Keep working: Ask the meeting questions (“What did the client say about the budget?”), have it draft a follow-up email, or share the notes.
What sets it apart from many other note-takers
- No bot in the call: nobody sees an extra participant. Nicer for client calls – but that’s why you have to tell people yourself.
- Your notes stay the backbone: the AI builds on your bullet points instead of handing you someone else’s minutes.
- No audio archive: according to Granola, audio is only used for transcription and not stored.

Privacy check (EU / GDPR)
- Consent in the call: In Germany the privately spoken word is protected under criminal law (§ 201 StGB), and the GDPR applies across the EU. Say at the start: “I’m using an AI note-taker – is that okay with you?” If not: pause it.
- Audio: according to Granola, only used for transcription and then discarded.
- Transcripts and notes: stored on US servers (AWS). Granola currently offers no EU data residency. US providers are used for transcription and summaries.
- Agreements and certificates: Granola offers a data processing agreement with EU standard contractual clauses and is SOC 2 Type 2 audited. You can switch off AI training on your data.
- My recommendation: Well suited to freelancers and small teams for their own client and project calls – with consent. Not for health or HR conversations. Inside a company, only with IT approval.
Up and running in 5 steps
- Open the link below on your laptop – Granola records audio on the computer (Mac or Windows). The mobile apps are an add-on.
- Sign up with your work email address and connect your calendar.
- If your calls aren’t in English, switch on multi-language in the settings – and switch off AI training on your data.
- Decide on a consent sentence for the start of each call.
- Run your next real meeting with it – only then will you see how much follow-up work disappears.

FAQ
Does Granola work for meetings in German or other languages?
Yes. Granola transcribes and summarises non-English conversations too, once multi-language support is switched on in the settings. The app interface itself is in English.
Is Granola GDPR-compliant?
Granola says it operates in line with the GDPR and offers a data processing agreement with EU standard contractual clauses. Audio is not stored, but transcripts and notes are kept on US servers and there is currently no EU data residency. That is reasonable for your own conversations with participants’ consent; inside a company, get approval from IT or your data protection officer first.
Does Granola add a bot to my meeting?
No. Granola captures audio directly from your computer instead of sending a visible participant into Zoom, Teams or Google Meet. That’s why you have to inform the other participants yourself and ask for their consent.
What does Granola cost?
Basic is free (notes stay available for 30 days). Business costs 14 US dollars per user per month, Enterprise 35 US dollars (as of October 2026).
Do I have to tell others that I’m using Granola?
Yes. In Germany, the privately spoken word is protected by law, and under the GDPR you need a legal basis. Say at the start of the call that an AI note-taker is running and ask whether that’s okay.
