Guides for startups & scale-ups
Define your ideal customer profile – with a template.
The short answer
An ideal customer profile (ICP) describes the companies that get the most value from your offer and are most likely to buy, stay and refer others. A good ICP includes firmographics, a clear problem, a buying trigger, the decision makers involved and explicit exclusions.
Five steps to your ICP
- List your best customers: which 5–10 bought quickly, stayed and are happy?
- Find what they share: industry, size, region, business model, tools they use.
- Clarify problem and trigger: what happened just before they started looking? (growth, new regulation, a new hire)
- Describe the buying committee: who uses, who decides, who can block?
- Set exclusions: who is your offer explicitly not for?
Fill-in template
| Field | Guiding question |
|---|---|
| Firmographics | Industry, headcount, revenue, region |
| Problem | What costs them time, money or customers today? |
| Trigger | Which event makes the problem urgent? |
| Decision makers | Who buys, who uses, who approves? |
| Alternatives | What do they do instead today – including “nothing”? |
| Success picture | How does the customer know after 90 days that it was worth it? |
| Exclusions | When do you deliberately say no? |
Validate your ICP, don't just write it down
An ICP is a hypothesis. Test it with 5–10 interviews with customers and prospects and a small outreach wave to matching companies. Reply rates and call quality quickly show whether you're right. Then treat the ICP like a product: refine it regularly with new data.
